Coach Steven Edwards emphasizes that IBF welterweight titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis will continue to compete at 147 pounds in anticipation of a significant bout that could materialize when Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Sabriel Matias transition from 140 pounds to welterweight. He is aiming to remain within the same weight class.

There is uncertainty around when the trio of light welterweights, with impressive records of 31-0 and 28 knockouts, will make the move up to 147 and potentially square off against Boots. Even if they do, the willingness of any of them to face Ennis, known for his formidable skills, remains questionable.

Envisioning the ‘super fight’

Edwards is unable to provide a definitive timeline or assurance regarding the possibility of a showdown between Haney, Teofimo, and Mathias against Boots. For Ennis, idly awaiting an eventuality that might not come to fruition during his career could be unwise. To avoid being left behind in his career, it’s advised that he steers clear of entanglements with this knockout virtuoso.

Once Haney makes the move to 147, it is evident that his father, Bill, will strategically keep him at a safe distance from Ennis and opt for less challenging opponents such as Mario Barrios, Connor Benn, and Cody Crowley.

“Boots must demonstrate consistency, face formidable opponents, and secure victories in the ring,” states Steven Edwards. “This will pave the way for the big fights to eventually materialize for him.” Read more about the fight hype concerning Jaron “Boots” Ennis’ necessity to remain in the welterweight category and await significant opportunities rather than seeking alternatives in junior middleweight.

“He cannot afford to compete infrequently and expect widespread acclaim. Currently, he has not amassed adequate victories to warrant sporadic appearances,” continues Stephen, in reference to Boots Ennis. “He needs to defeat notable opponents regularly and remain in the limelight.

“He possesses an entertaining style, often seeking knockouts swiftly – reminiscent of the excitement generated by talents like Mike Tyson or Roy Jones Jr. It’s rare to witness a fighter as electrifying as him.

“While he is a skilled pugilist, his inclination towards knockout victories is evident. This aligns with his progression in this weight class. Moving up to the [154] division seems unnecessary at this point. Considering the potential emergence of Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Matias within proximity, just one division away, I’m not suggesting an immediate matchup,” Stephen added.
