Former junior lightweight titleholder Nicholas Walters achieved a significant victory on Wednesday as he beat Joseph Adorno by a unanimous decision at the Probox TV Event Center in Plant City, Florida.
Two judges scored the 10-round lightweight bout 98-91 and 97-92 in favor of the 38-year-old Walters, while the third judge’s score was a close 95-94 due to a one-point deduction for Adorno hitting after the ninth round bell. This win marked Walters’ first major victory since his return to boxing after a six-year retirement, having previously lost to Vasily Lomachenko in 2016 and secured two wins over opponents from Colombia last year.
Nicholas Walters upsets Joseph Adorno with UD10 at 7/2 (+350). From start to finish, the 38-year-old dominated the extremely underperforming Puerto Rican, who received a points deduction after the ninth round. Adorno now has 1 win and 3 losses in his last four fights. [Link to tweet]
Walters (29-1, 22 KOs) took control of the fight early with his jab and steadily wore down the 24-year-old Adorno (18-4-2, 15 KOs) with body punches. Although Adorno landed a solid overhand right in the sixth round, he was unable to maintain momentum, allowing Walters to regain control.
The loss, highlighted on this week’s Pro Box broadcast, marked Adorno’s third defeat in his last four fights.
In other matches, Dominican junior welterweight Starling Castillo (19-1-1, 13 KOs) secured a victory over Mexico’s Jesus Saracho (13-2-1, 11 KOs) through split decision, with scores of 99-91 and 98-92 in Castillo’s favor and 96-94 in favor of Saracho on the third card.
