Glenn Jennings, Tim Tszyu’s manager, revealed that there is a rematch clause following the recent fight where Tszyu faced Sebastian Fundora.
Jennings is advocating for an immediate rematch between Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs) and Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) to give Tszyu another shot at claiming the WBO junior middleweight title and the WBC belt after his loss. The fight concluded in a 12-round split decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Here are Tszyu’s options:
- Immediate Rematch: This presents an opportunity for Tszyu to avenge his loss to Fundora and recapture the WBO title he was stripped of.
- Team Player: Opting for this choice would potentially set up a significant showdown between Fundora and Errol Spence, a move that could benefit the promotion company. If Tszyu wants to cooperate with PBC, this might be the strategic move to make.
- Injury Concerns: Tszyu is dealing with a severe scalp injury that requires time to heal, and forcing an immediate rematch could lead to a significant delay for recovery and hinder Fundora’s career progression.
Due to the severity of Tszyu’s injury, it remains uncertain when he will be fit to return to the ring, possibly delaying his comeback by several months.
Moreover, Tszyu, affiliated with PBC, is rumored to be in line for a high-profile fight against either Errol Spence or Fundora. If Tszyu triggers the rematch clause, it could disrupt PBC’s plans for a Spence vs. Fundora mega-fight.
By opting to step aside and allow Spence to face Fundora first, Tszyu could demonstrate his willingness to cooperate and wait for his turn to face the winner.
Glenn Jennings on the situation:
“He is aware of the rematch clause. If we decide to proceed, we will. I hope Tszyu considers it and swiftly recaptures the title,” stated Tim Tszyu’s manager, Glenn Jennings. Jay McAllister. The rematch clause grants the option for an immediate rematch between Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora.
“I’m pleased that the rematch is likely to happen soon, and I wish Tszyu the best. It does alter the planned schedule for the year,” Jennings remarked, expressing that Tszyu’s loss affected the potential fights against Errol Spence and Terrence Crawford. When asked about the impact on the Crawford fight, Jennings replied,
“It doesn’t signify a negative change but presents another bout for Tszyu to contemplate. The opportunity lies in facing Errol Spence or Terrence Crawford, among others. If such opportunities arise, it would be unwise to overlook them.
“Tonight, Tszyu didn’t diminish his standing in any way. It merely showcases his fighting spirit, stepping into the ring for 10 rounds, taking risks, and demonstrating his readiness. Despite the cut, he persevered and pushed for a split decision,” Jennings praised Tszyu’s performance.
