IBF super middleweight contender William Scurll has secured a significant spot on the undercard of Ring super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez’s upcoming title defense against Jaime Munguia.
Scurll is scheduled to face Sean Hemphill on May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as part of the undercard.
After an impressive victory over Evgeny Shvedenko, Scurll, a Cuban-born fighter based in Germany, has risen through the ranks and is now the mandatory challenger for the IBF title.
“William will be traveling to Las Vegas next week for his final training camp before stepping into the ring on the undercard of Canelo vs. Munguia in front of a global audience,” stated AGON promoter Ingo Volkman. He further emphasized, “A standout performance against the undefeated Evgeny Shvedenko earned William the mandatory challenger position. Canelo will have a tough challenge ahead!”
If Munguia is unable to compete for any reason, Scurll, who is training in Mallorca and Berlin, is poised to be the backup opponent to face Canelo.
This opportunity on such a grand stage is expected to raise Scurll’s profile as he eyes a potential shot at a world title in the near future.
With a record of 21-0 and 9 knockouts, Scurll left Cuba for Argentina before turning professional in 2016. He later relocated to Germany and joined AGON.
The 31-year-old fighter has notable victories over Gino Canters (unanimous decision in 12 rounds) and Denev Diaz (second-round knockout). However, his most significant win was against Shvedenko in July 2022 (unanimous decision in 12 rounds), followed by two more victories to keep him active.
Hemphill (16-1, with 10 KOs) had a successful amateur career and transitioned to the professional circuit in 2019 after regularly reaching the medal rounds at the U.S. Championships. He faced a setback in a loss to David Stevens (8 KOs) but has since rebounded with two decision wins.
While this match represents a step up for Hemphill, it also presents a major opportunity for the 28-year-old fighter from New Orleans.
