Ryan Garcia’s recent antics have left fans questioning if his behavior is all a ploy to grab attention ahead of Devin Haney’s upcoming super lightweight title fight on Saturday. The official weigh-in that took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 20, 2024, has left many bewildered as Garcia displayed some erratic behavior.
Some are speculating whether Garcia might be feeling nervous and attempting to find a way out of the fight.
Veteran boxing writer Dan Rafael expressed his concern, stating, “Ryan Garcia is significantly over the weight limit for this fight, reportedly tipping the scales at 143.2 pounds. This makes him ineligible to compete for the WBC 140-pound title. It’s a complete fiasco and sadly not unexpected. While a financial agreement was eventually reached, it fell short of the $500,000 offered at the press conference. Moreover, the actual contract isn’t legally binding.”
Dismissing any belief that Garcia might be joking, Rafael rebuked doubters, saying, “It’s evident that Ryan is not mentally or physically prepared for this bout. He’s dealing with personal issues, and it’s a pity. Despite having good intentions, he’s struggling, and it seems like there’s a lack of support around him. Haney will pose a real threat.”
Even Garcia’s own promoter has expressed concerns about his mental state.
Golden Boy Promotions released a statement acknowledging, “Ryan has exceeded the agreed weight for the fight, but he has promised to honor the terms set during the last press conference. The fight goes on.”
