Tony Bellew believes that Jaime Munguia is the perfect opponent for Canelo Alvarez in their upcoming fight on May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While fans were hoping for a match against David Benavidez, Canelo was not keen on taking the risk.
Bellew thinks that Munguia has a shot at winning if he can outmaneuver Canelo without taking heavy hits in return. However, it will be a tough task for Munguia to achieve. The upcoming Canelo vs. Munguia event is priced at $89.99 on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN PPV, a cost that might deter some fans who would have otherwise purchased the fight if it were priced at $75.
With a lackluster matchup and weak undercard, many fans are questioning the value of paying $89.99 to watch the fight. To justify this price, fans either need a strong admiration for Canelo or have high regard for Munguia as a formidable opponent.
Canelo’s Downturn
“Canelo chose Munguia right away, clearly avoiding Benavidez. Still, Canelo deserves credit for his versatility. He has competed in various weight classes,” noted Tony Bellew. DAZN Boxing showcased Canelo Alvarez handpicking Jaime Munguia for the May 4th brawl.
“I see him as a remarkable fighter, but I believe he’s past his prime,” he added. While Canelo showcased a decent performance in his latest bout with Jermell Charlo, his previous match with John Ryder was lackluster. The uncertain performance leaves questions about Canelo’s current form.
“Canelo was at his peak when he defeated Golovkin in their second fight. Where does he stand now?” Ade Oladipo raised the question.
“Around 80,” Bellew speculated about Canelo’s current level. “Maybe even 75. His performance against Bivol was subpar, though Bivol presented a tough challenge. Canelo may have underestimated Bivol due to his undefeated record, which often doesn’t reflect a fighter’s true capabilities until tested thoroughly,” he explained.
Munguia’s Challenge Against Canelo
“Munguia faces a tough battle against Canelo. For Munguia to surpass Canelo, he must display a level of skill that prevents Canelo from landing significant shots. It’s a tall order for Munguia,” Bellew expressed.
If Munguia can endure Canelo’s powerful hits, he might have a chance to outshine the ring legend. In Munguia’s previous fight against John Ryder, he absorbed a barrage of punches and struggled. With a bit more power, Ryder could have potentially toppled Munguia, given how easily he was struck during that match.
“At this rate, we might as well sell out T-Mobile,” remarked Ade humorously.
