Finding the Right Opponent for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis: A Tough Decision

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, thinks that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis has a lot of great options for his next fight among the top lightweights. He sees potential matchups with Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Isaac Cruz, and Subriel Matias at 140 pounds, and even a possible rematch with Ryan Garcia at a catchweight of 145 pounds, as more profitable choices for Davis compared to his upcoming title defense against Frank Martin. Ellerbe also thinks that fights against Shakur Stevenson and Vasily Lomachenko might not be as financially rewarding for Davis.

When discussing the best opponent on the B-side for Davis, Ellerbe mentioned that all the lightweight division fighters are quite skilled, including Shakur Stevenson, Frank Martin, Lomachenko, and Keyshawn Davis. He highlighted that setting up a fight between Davis and Stevenson could be difficult due to business factors and Bob Arum’s strategic approach.

Ellerbe brought up the Lightweight tournament held by Top Rank, which he said limited chances for non-Top Rank fighters. He stressed that Bob Arum is primarily concerned with maximizing profits and is not eager to give titles to fighters outside of his promotion unless there are substantial financial benefits involved.
