Sydney Sweeney has been chosen to depict the boxing icon Christy Martin in a forthcoming biographical film.

The renowned actress, known for her performances in the HBO series Euphoria and the recent popular movie Anyone But You, has committed to the project. The movie will be helmed by David Michôd, recognized for works like Animal Kingdom and The King, with Black Bear taking charge of production after previously backing Sweeney’s horror film Immaculate.

Christy Martin, an inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, is hailed as a trailblazer in women’s boxing. She broke ground as the first female boxer to sign with boxing promoter Don King and to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.

In 2010, Martin made headlines following a harrowing attack by her husband, who was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder.

Sweeney’s interest in the role is fueled by her enthusiasm for combat sports, having trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in her youth and being an avid follower of MMA competitions.

When speaking to Deadline, Sweeney shared her enthusiasm for the part, stating, “Christy’s narrative is both physically and emotionally demanding, but I enjoy pushing myself. She encountered challenges and refused to be defeated by them.”

The biographical film, which is yet to be named, is poised to commence filming later this year in the United States. Sweeney hinted at her transformation for the role by revealing dark hair at the recent Met Gala, reminiscent of Martin’s distinctive appearance during her boxing career.
