UFC matchmakers Joe Silva, Sean Shelby, and Mick Maynard usually stay quiet about their work, but a recent video from TKO Group Holdings shed some light on Maynard’s scouting process for potential fighters.
Maynard looks for fighters with strong records and impressive finishes, such as knockouts or submissions, when considering signings for UFC, The Ultimate Fighter, and the promotion’s Contender Series.
While there’s no set checklist, Maynard stresses the importance of finishing fights, stating that if fighters aren’t closing fights at the regional level, they may struggle in the big leagues.
Maynard said, “There’s so many aspects that Sean [Shelby] and I really concentrate on. Obviously, you’ve got to look at the record. You have to look at, are they finishing fights?
“Quite frankly, if they’re not finishing fights on the regional level, they’re not going to come into the biggest league in the world and finish people. That’s important.”
Apart from scouting at regional events, UFC has extended its reach by establishing Performance Institutes in China and Mexico.
These institutes, starting with the one in Las Vegas, offer top-tier training, preparation, recovery, and rehabilitation services. UFC aims to replicate this success globally.
Maynard noted the impact of Performance Institutes, mentioning the growth in talent and the recent openings in Shanghai, China, and Mexico.
He likened the institutes to scholarships for fighters, providing essential resources like food, housing, training, coaching, and physical therapy to groom potential UFC fighters.
The focus is on finding the world’s best fighters, with remarkable success stories emerging from Mexico City.
While fighter records and finishing rates matter, UFC is always on the lookout for hidden talents like Conor McGregor, whose unique personality sets them apart.
Maynard added, “Every now and again, you’ll get a Conor McGregor who has his personality that’s off the charts and you have a whole new animal. A superstar. All of those things combined, we take into account.”
