After triumphing over Dustin Poirier in his lightweight title defense, Islam Makhachev is now eyeing an additional challenge and another championship belt. Makhachev once again displayed his prowess by forcing Poirier to submit in the fifth round of their UFC 302 bout. In a post-fight chat with Joe Rogan, Makhachev voiced his ambition to pursue a second title, emphasizing that merely defending his current championship is insufficient, and he craves another one.
Previously, Makhachev had shown interest in facing welterweight champion Leon Edwards; however, he had to forgo the opportunity to fight him at UFC 300 due to training constraints during Ramadan. Edwards is set to defend his title against Belal Muhammad on July 27, and if he emerges victorious, a potential face-off with Makhachev might be in the cards. Nevertheless, if Muhammad emerges triumphant, Makhachev’s path could take a different trajectory.
