Dustin Poirier faced off against UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 on June 1, 2024. Despite his efforts, he was unable to secure the victory and lost to a fifth-round d’arce choke. This match marked Poirier’s third attempt at claiming the undisputed championship title, but he fell short once again.

There was much speculation surrounding whether this fight could potentially be Poirier’s last in his remarkable 40-fight career (30 wins, 9 losses, 1 no contest). While initially contemplating retirement in the event of a win, Poirier is now uncertain about his future in the sport.

In his own words, Poirier expressed his current sentiment, stating, “I’m leaning towards being done. For sure, especially with getting the title fight, how many more times would I need to fight to put myself back in position to fight for the world title? I don’t know… I’m in a weird spot and I don’t know what decision to make.”

Despite not achieving the undisputed championship title, Poirier did hold interim Lightweight gold once and received 10 Fight of the Night bonuses throughout his 31 appearances in the UFC.
