The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced on Monday that Devin Haney, the WBC Super Lightweight World Champion, has asked to be named Champion in Recess. The WBC Board of Governors unanimously approved his request, making him the WBC World Champion in Recess. After a contentious loss to Ryan Garcia, Haney has opted to step aside from holding the WBC junior welterweight title.

In addition, the WBC Board of Governors has appointed the current Interim World Champion, Alberto Puello, as the WBC World Super Lightweight Champion. As per the WBC’s Rules and Regulations, there will be a negotiation period for Puello’s mandatory title defense against Sandor Martin, the WBC’s #1-rated challenger and mandatory contender.

Haney’s tenure as the WBC junior welterweight champion was brief. After achieving the undisputed lightweight champion status by defeating Vasyl Lomachenko in a tight bout, Haney moved up to junior welterweight and claimed the WBC belt by beating Regis Prograis in his hometown of San Francisco. Nevertheless, his defeat to Garcia last April proved to be a significant setback.

Despite enduring the fight until the end, Haney faced a tough time against Garcia, being knocked down thrice in various rounds before losing by decision. Garcia later tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, resulting in the New York State Athletic Commission stripping him of the victory. While Haney was somewhat vindicated, the impact of Garcia’s performance in their fight still lingers.

Looking ahead, the looming question is: What lies ahead for Haney? Despite his undeniable skill, the defeat to Garcia was a hard blow. Yet, fighters are known for their resilience, and Haney might stage a solid comeback in the future.
