Anthony Smith chooses not to criticize Jon Jones following his recent issues with drug testing.
Jones, who is 36 years old, was alleged to have made threats toward Drug Free Sport International (DFSI) during a surprise visit in March 2024. The UFC Heavyweight champion made a plea deal after being charged with two misdemeanors this week.
Although the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) no longer collaborates with the UFC, experienced fighters like Smith are familiar with the drug testing procedures. Smith, who has faced Jones in the ring before, understands the difficulties Jones is facing.
Smith expressed empathy for Jones, saying, “I supported him in the beginning because dealing with drug testing can be quite a hassle.” He added, “I’ve been fortunate to have respectful drug testers who value my time. However, I’ve encountered some who can be disrespectful and authoritative.”
Jones, a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, defended his title against Smith at UFC 235 in March 2019. He has since moved up to the Heavyweight division and claimed victory over Ciryl Gane in March 2023.
