Non-compete clauses in wrestling can be confusing for fans as it limits what a wrestler can do during a specific period. WWE typically includes 30-day non-competes in their “WWE NXT” contracts and 90-day non-competes in their main roster contracts. This means that when a talent is released, they are still paid during the non-compete period but are restricted from engaging in wrestling-related activities.
Former WWE star Donovan Dijak recently shared his insights on the pros and cons of non-compete clauses during an episode of Chris Van Vliet’s “Insight” podcast. Dijak mentioned that while being paid during the non-compete period is beneficial, it can also result in a decrease in relevance for the wrestler.
Dijak expressed, “It’s a double-edged sword. On one hand, the 90 days provide a cooling-off period and an opportunity to organize yourself while still receiving payment. It aligns well with the typical booking timelines in the independent wrestling and meet-and-greet circuit. You can easily schedule your appearances during this time.” He added, “Although there are challenges, the positive aspect is the buzz you can generate. I strategically timed my social media post to coincide with the release letter in hopes of making it the major wrestling news of the day.”
Having completed his WWE contract without a non-compete clause, Dijak has been actively involved in the independent wrestling scene, with numerous appearances planned for the remainder of the year.
