The conclusion echoed Mike McCallum’s memorable victory with a single punch knockout over Donald Curry back in 1987. In the heat of a closely contested, top-tier bout, McCallum let loose a left hook seemingly from nowhere that dropped Curry in front of HBO cameras. Fast forward to today, and it was Angelo Leo who landed the decisive left hook, flooring Luis Lopez as the referee started the count over him with ESPN cameras rolling. It was a flawless knockout, possibly deserving recognition as knockout of the year, but most importantly, it secured Leo, now with a 24-2 record, the IBF world featherweight title.
Lopez, who had put up a brave fight until the last moments of the match, now stands at a 30-2 record. Nevertheless, it was the new champion who stole the show. “For four or five months, we’ve been practicing it,” Leo stated about the fight-altering left hook in the tenth round. “I want to fight all the champions.” This win was especially meaningful for Leo as it happened in front of his hometown crowd in Albuquerque. “Thanks to all my fans,” Leo shared. “I love you.” With a victory like Saturday’s, Leo has undoubtedly earned Albuquerque’s love and support in return.
