Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, recently defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson in an 8-round boxing match. While the event sparked conversation, the discussions were not universally positive.
Paul, who is 27, secured victory through a wide points decision, marking his 12th boxing match and adding another win to his record. Tyson, who retired in 2005, offered little resistance during the fight.
The match broke records but also attracted criticism, with many people arguing that Paul is targeting retired boxers who are well past their prime. At 58, Tyson fits this description.
Following the fight, another older boxer, Shannon Briggs, has expressed interest in challenging Paul. Briggs, 53, and a former heavyweight champion, hasn’t been in the ring since 2016 but is known for his powerful first-round performances, with 37 victories to his name. He also claimed the WBO heavyweight title in 2006.
Briggs shares a connection with Paul, having helped train Jake and his brother, Logan, in their early boxing days. Speaking to Boxing Social, Briggs commented, “I didn’t think much of it. He did what he had to do to get the money. It was cool, but I think Mike could’ve knocked him out. If he can’t, I will – let’s go champ.”
Briggs is dissatisfied with Tyson’s performance and feels a sense of responsibility for Paul’s rise in boxing. He’s motivated to set things right, and the financial incentive doesn’t hurt either.
Despite being challenged by current champions in three different weight classes, Paul is likely to pursue other opportunities for his next fight. While a match with Briggs could be intriguing, it remains uncertain what Paul’s next move will be.
