Roy Jones Jr. believes that Sugar Ray Leonard is the only fighter capable of defeating Floyd Mayweather at his peak. The boxing legend expressed this view in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated.

Jones Jr. has extensive experience at the pinnacle of the sport. Over more than three decades, he dominated, securing world titles in four weight divisions, ranging from middleweight to heavyweight. He was the first fighter in 106 years to claim a heavyweight title after beginning his career at middleweight. Known for his unmatched speed and agility in the ring, he notched significant victories over James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, and John Ruiz.

Mayweather’s career was equally remarkable. He retired with an unblemished 50-0 record, boasting 27 knockouts. Throughout his career, he held titles in five weight divisions, from super featherweight to super welterweight. His list of wins includes prominent names such as Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, and even MMA superstar Conor McGregor.

When asked who could have defeated Mayweather at his best, Jones Jr. was quick to respond. He confidently told Sports Illustrated, “I would take Sugar Ray Leonard. That taking nothing away from Floyd, fought for currency, Ray fought for legacy.”

Leonard was a pivotal member of the ‘Four Kings’, alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. Leonard secured world titles in five weight classes and was the undisputed welterweight champion. His career concluded with 36 victories out of 40 bouts, closing with a loss to Hector Camacho in 1997.

Jones Jr.’s choice might come as a surprise to some, but it underscores the high esteem he holds for Leonard’s abilities and mindset. Envisioning a matchup between these two boxing legends at their prime is a truly enticing thought for any boxing enthusiast.
