Shannon Briggs, a former heavyweight world champion, has summed up Jake Paul’s boxing ability in three words: “He’s more entertainment.” Briggs, who helped train Paul early in his boxing career, recently watched the YouTuber-turned-boxer fight Mike Tyson.
Last month, Paul beat Tyson on points in a boxing match in Texas. The fight turned out to be an underwhelming affair, with the 58-year-old Tyson unable to do much past the first minute against the 27-year-old Paul. The match left many spectators disappointed.
Despite Paul’s ambition to win a world title in the cruiserweight ranks, Briggs doesn’t think he’s in that league. The former champ shared his thoughts on Paul’s abilities: “He’s more entertainment. He got a little something. Jake’s a different type of guy.”
Interestingly, Briggs had more positive things to say about Jake’s brother, Logan Paul: “Logan got a lot more. He can really fight. He’s got some skills.”
Briggs advised Jake to stay away from world champions like Artur Beterbiev, the undisputed light-heavyweight king, and Daniel Dubois, a new heavyweight titlist. Both fighters have called out Paul recently.
The former heavyweight champ also recalled some predictions he made years ago: “I foreseen this years ago when I was working with Jake Paul and Logan Paul. I said to Jake one day you’ll fight [Floyd] Mayweather and I told Logan one day you’ll fight Tyson. They thought I was crazy. It happened in reverse. What can I say? I tell no lies.”
While Tyson has confirmed that this fight was his last time through the ropes, Paul forges ahead as one of the most controversial figures in boxing. Briggs, who comes from the same neighborhood as Tyson, expressed happiness for the former undisputed heavyweight champion: “Happy for Mike to be at 58-years-old and to be able to make money, feed his family.”
As Paul continues his boxing journey, it remains to be seen how far his skills will take him beyond the entertainment factor that Briggs highlighted.
