Teofimo Lopez took advantage of the spotlight on Saturday’s ESPN cards to call out Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Gervonta Davis, and Terence Crawford, in that order. Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) is desperate for a big fight after being ignored in his recent attempts at luring Devin Haney to face him.
Lopez Wants Ennis
If Teofimo is seriously interested in fighting Ennis, it would have to be at welterweight because he’s too big to move down to 140.
In the interview, Lopez said he deserves the bigger cut for the guys he’s calling out because he’s the “king of the division.” He’s not going to get any of those guys with his attitude, and he’ll likely have to continue fighting the same obscure opposition he’s been in the last few years.
It’s interesting that Teofimo, 27, wants to fight Ennis because, in the past, he felt he brought nothing to the table to him. Does his recent poor performance against Karen Chukhadzhian have anything to do with Teo’s sudden interest?
“I need a guy that is going to fight. If you guys say you’re the best, fight the best,” said Teofimo Lopez to Top Rank Boxing, saying he wants to return to the ring against a good opponent. “Jaron Ennis ‘Boots’, Gervonta Davis, and finish with Terence Crawford,” said Teofimo when asked to name who he wants to fight.
Gervonta isn’t going to waste time by fighting Teofimo because he’s got a lot of other fighters at 135 he can face. Crawford doesn’t take Teo seriously and won’t bother.
When ESPN’s Mark Kriegel asked Teofimo who he wanted to fight, he rattled off Boots, Tank, and Crawford. This isn’t the first time Teofimo has called out big names, and the only one he’s ever delivered was Vasily Lomachenko. The rest of the guys Teofimo has fought have been lesser ones.
