Trevor Lee, formerly known as Cameron Grimes in WWE, is making waves on the independent wrestling circuit after opening up about his struggles during his WWE main roster stint. While his time in NXT saw him thrive as a top-tier competitor, a mainstay in memorable storylines with Ted DiBiase and LA Knight, and even capturing the NXT North American Championship, his transition to SmackDown told a different story.

Drafted to SmackDown in 2023, Grimes debuted with much fanfare. However, his main roster run quickly turned into a frustrating chapter, as he was largely relegated to dark matches and live events. In what would be his final WWE match, he suffered a quick loss to Bron Breakker on the April 12 episode of SmackDown. Just days later, WWE released him on April 23.

Speaking to Fightful, Trevor Lee discussed the emotional toll of going from a prominent NXT star to a lesser-utilized talent on the main roster.

“It definitely is hard, right, because every person I talked to, the top wrestlers and even people in the back liked me and told me that I was good and told me that I had that talent to be able to showcase it,” Lee explained. “So then it was like, okay, well, if I’m being told that, then let me show that, right. So it was frustrating.”

He also reflected on the age-old criticism of wrestlers who complain despite receiving a paycheck. “You hear all the time, ‘Oh, you’re getting paid. Why don’t you just shut up?’ I thought that could be the case when I was poor… But at the end of the day, I’m the biggest mark. I got into this business because I loved it and I wanted to do it. I didn’t want to just get paid to do it. I want to do it. So yeah, it did frustrate me.”

Since leaving WWE, Trevor Lee has reignited his career on the independent scene, showcasing his talent with promotions like Maple Leaf Pro, RevPro, and Deadlock Pro-Wrestling. The return to his roots has seemingly reignited his passion, giving fans a chance to see the world-class performer in his element.
