Canelo Alvarez summed up the difference between himself and David Benavidez in four words: “He’s good, I’m great.”
The unified super-middleweight champion made the statement in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, addressing the ongoing comparisons and fight speculation between the two boxers.
Alvarez holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles in the super-middleweight division. He’s a multi-weight world champion, having held belts from super-welterweight all the way up to light heavyweight. His list of wins includes big names like Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, and Miguel Cotto.
Benavidez, on the other hand, is the former two-time WBC super-middleweight champion and current WBC interim light heavyweight champion. He’s undefeated and has been trying to secure a fight with Canelo for a while now.
The Mexican superstar doesn’t seem interested, though. He claims a fight with Benavidez won’t do anything for his legacy. Alvarez even went as far as to demand a $150-200 million purse for the potential matchup.
While Canelo prepares for his expected return to the ring in May, Benavidez has moved on. He stepped up to the 175lbs division, beating Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim light heavyweight title in June. Now, he’s got a fight lined up with David Morrell in February for the WBA regular light heavyweight title.
Canelo’s future might involve a clash with Terence Crawford, but nothing’s set in stone yet. One thing’s for sure – he’s made it clear where he thinks he stands compared to Benavidez.
