Conor McGregor may be finished with Ireland after the country’s treatment of him following a guilty verdict for sexual assault in civil court.
McGregor ignited a fervor in MMA during his ascent to double champion status, but his recent behavior has damaged his standing back home. In the aftermath of a 2018 hotel encounter with Nikita Hand, speculation and rumors about the incident circulated widely within the community.
Six years later, a jury found McGregor guilty of assaulting Hand.
“The Notorious” is required to pay Hand approximately $260,000 in damages and an additional $1.6 million in legal fees. Furthermore, the court may impose an extra fine on him for his remarks referring to the proceedings as a ‘kangaroo court.’
McGregor did not hold back on social media following the verdict, posting comments that characterized Dublin as a corrupt city filled with hostile individuals intent on bringing him down. Reports from the Irish Mirror suggest that Conor might be contemplating a move away from Ireland to Florida.
“Conor has been completely rattled by the devastating fallout from losing the civil case,” a source close to McGregor told the Mirror. “He intends to appeal the verdict to clear his name and is genuinely very upset by it all, particularly the sense of betrayal he feels.”
The commercial impact in Britain and Ireland has been significant, with retailers refusing to stock his stout and Proper No. 12 whiskey. However, the case hasn’t had the same detrimental effect in the United States, where many of his fans continue to support him. For now, he seeks to leave Ireland and return to the States.
While McGregor already owns property in Las Vegas, he reportedly plans to relocate to Florida, which is a hub for high-level MMA activity. Nevertheless, moving won’t resolve all of his issues: he still intends to appeal the Hand verdict and faces a multi-million dollar lawsuit from former friend Artem Lobov concerning Proper 12 proceeds.
