Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are currently leading figures in the lightweight division. These two champions have yet to face each other in the ring, but they are receiving considerable attention from boxing legends who recognize their talents.

Floyd Mayweather, the retired five-weight world champion who boasts a flawless 50-0 record, recently shared his insights on the two fighters. Speaking on the Come And Talk 2 Me Podcast, he discussed the distinct strengths each fighter possesses.

According to Mayweather, “The biggest puncher at 135 would probably be Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, but the most skillful fighter at 135 would be, hands down, Shakur Stevenson.” This sentiment underscores the unique abilities both boxers bring to the division.

Mayweather, often referred to as ‘TBE’ (The Best Ever), stressed the significance of skill in boxing. He drew a parallel between Stevenson and the legendary Pernell Whitaker, pointing out that while Whitaker “wasn’t a huge puncher,” he was “very exciting, very tough, and fought everybody.”

In continuing his praise for Stevenson, Mayweather remarked, “Shakur’s trying to do the same thing. He wants to fight the best they got out there. He’s asking can he fight the best.” This highlights Stevenson’s ambition to take on top-tier opponents.

Both Davis and Stevenson have upcoming fights scheduled. Davis is set to defend his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach in March. Meanwhile, Stevenson, who holds the WBC championship at 135 pounds, will face Floyd Schofield a month earlier.

A potential showdown between Davis and Stevenson is currently one of the most anticipated matchups in boxing. However, recent comments from Davis suggest he may not be interested in pursuing this bout at the moment.

As excitement in the lightweight division builds, fans are closely watching Davis and Stevenson’s careers. Their pending fights have the potential to pave the way for even grander matchups in the future.
