Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are set to clash in a highly anticipated rematch this weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fury is seeking redemption after experiencing his first career defeat at the hands of Usyk.
The last meeting between these two heavyweight champions occurred in May, also in Riyadh. In that bout, Usyk emerged victorious by a split decision, seizing Fury’s WBC belt and adding it to his collection alongside the WBA and WBO titles. However, Usyk’s undisputed status was short-lived as the IBF belt was stripped and is now held by Daniel Dubois.
Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, disclosed to Boxing News that plans for a third fight are already in place, contingent on Fury winning the upcoming rematch.
“Oh, it does [trump all other fights] because it’s contracted. And whatever happens that would be the case, if Tyson wins. Provided nobody retires.”
Fury concurs with the need for a trilogy of fights. He expressed his thoughts on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, emphasizing the importance of a third encounter:
“When I win this fight with Usyk then there has to be a third fight. There has to be. Because if you win one and I win one then there has to be a third fight. Regardless who won the second one, there has to be a third fight to see who is the best out of us two. One each, one decider. And that’s what I’ll look for after that.”
Currently, Fury’s primary focus is to become the sole fighter to defeat Usyk, who has achieved undisputed champion status in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. Usyk now holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO belts.
