With the potential fight between Conor McGregor and Logan Paul gaining significant attention, former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier has raised questions regarding the announcement.
Earlier this week, McGregor revealed that he is in discussions to face WWE superstar Logan Paul in a boxing match, rather than making a return to the UFC.
According to Bloody Elbow sources, Paul has been approached about the prospect of this boxing bout against the Irishman and is currently engaged in talks.
It has now been over three years since McGregor last fought in the Octagon, when he suffered a broken ankle during his trilogy match against Dustin Poirier.
Since then, the 36-year-old has made multiple claims about returning, with fans getting their hopes up this past June when he was just two weeks away from a highly-anticipated fight against Michael Chandler.
Unfortunately, after withdrawing due to a broken toe, supporters found themselves once again doubting whether McGregor would ever step back into the UFC again.
Despite these setbacks, the news of McGregor’s possible matchup with Logan Paul has prompted UFC commentator Daniel Cormier to question the sincerity of the Irishman’s intentions.
Cormier commented, “We talk about impact. That right there tells you the impact of Conor McGregor,” while discussing the broader implications of McGregor’s frequent announcements.
He added, “Conor McGregor has told us a lot of things over the last three years. None of them have come to fruition. I’m gonna have to see it to believe it.”
Following UFC Tampa this past Saturday, UFC CEO Dana White mentioned that he is working on an unexpected and “crazy fight,” which has since been confirmed to be the McGregor vs. Paul matchup.
Cormier expressed his thoughts, stating, “I think he’s gonna fight in the Octagon. I think he has to, though. For Conor McGregor to – he’s got to rinse some of the stench off of him from everything that’s happened outside of the Octagon. Where he made his home is inside that cage, and I think at some point he’s gonna have to get back there.”
On the other hand, Logan Paul has transitioned from boxing gloves to the wrestling ring, becoming a notable figure in WWE, which is now under TKO, the same parent company that owns the UFC.
Recently, Paul announced his retirement from WWE on his podcast after welcoming a new child; however, plans changed as he participated in a Kickoff event for Monday Night Raw, signaling his return to the Raw roster in January.
During this promo, Paul referenced McGregor’s famous phrase, fueling speculation about a significant fight with the former UFC champion.
“I am a bully, and the WWE is my playground. So, look, I’m not here to take part, I’m here to take over, your approval means nothing to me, whether you love me or hate me, I don’t care,” Paul asserted.
This memorable line echoes McGregor’s declaration back in 2014 after he knocked out Diego Brandao in their main event match in Dublin, Ireland.
