Steve Weisfeld is poised to replace Fernando Barbosa as a judge for the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury II boxing match in Saudi Arabia. This change is anticipated to occur prior to the rules meeting.
Barbosa, a Miami native, withdrew from the event due to illness. Concerns also arose over a potential conflict of interest, as Barbosa is employed by Disney and ESPN, with ESPN working alongside Fury’s US promoter, Top Rank.
Hailing from New Jersey, Weisfeld traveled to Riyadh on Thursday night. He brings significant experience in judging high-profile boxing matches and has witnessed both Fury and Usyk compete in the past.
Weisfeld served as a judge for Fury’s rematch and third bout against Deontay Wilder, where he scored in Fury’s favor when Wilder was stopped. Additionally, he judged Usyk’s initial fight with Anthony Joshua, marking it 116-112 in Usyk’s favor.
