Recently losing in his return to the UFC Octagon, Colby Covington has already highlighted former title challenger Gilbert Burns as his potential next opponent following a phone number leaking saga. After almost a year out of action, Covington returned at UFC Tampa recently to take on the soaring Joaquin Buckley.
‘New Mansa’ utterly dominated the former UFC interim welterweight champion, subsequently scoring the doctor stoppage win in the third round after Covington continuously leaked blood from his eye.
In his corner for the fight was ‘The American Gangster’, UFC legend Chael Sonnen. Although Sonnen hasn’t had much experience cornering, he has stayed in the sport since his retirement, doing a lot of analytical work. During the beating Buckley was inflicting on Covington, Sonnen claimed that he was just about to throw in the towel before the doctor stopped the fight.
After suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, it was relatively unclear where Covington was going to go from here considering his inactivity over the past few years. Despite that, he took another big loss just a day later when he was eliminated from the World Series of Poker tournament in the Bahamas.
However, reverting to fighting, Covington took to his Twitch Live stream just days following his defeat and called out former title challenger, Gilbert Burns. Earlier this week, ‘Durinho’ leaked Sonnen’s phone number after Sonnen claimed that Burns was retired from the sport, resulting in a slew of phone calls from excited fans, which Sonnen dealt with extremely well.
It didn’t sit well with Covington, though, who said: “That’s disgusting, man, that’s despicable, that’s not right man, that’s really messed up. Now he’s getting tonnes of people calling him with stupid sh*t and calling him with stupid pranks, it’s a security concern… What are we, in high school? That’s really messed up that Gilbert did that to Uncle Chael.”
“I said, ‘Hey Uncle Chael if you want me to handle that inside the Octagon, I will get justice for us, I will get justice on Gilbert’s f*cking face, I will make sure he never shows his face in America ever again, that’s how badly I’d beat him,” Covington continued.
Although the Brazilian 38-year-old isn’t officially retired, he has lost his last three fights in extremely disappointing fashion and is seemingly at the end of his career. Despite that, Burns has responded to Covington’s fight callout with a date offer.
“Miami April! Just (sign) the contract! I know you’re not showing up! @ColbyCovMMA,” Burns said in a tweet on X. The promotion is rumored to be landing back in Miami in April, and with Burns living in Florida, he has highlighted that as a perfect battleground.
However, Covington’s long-time rival, Jorge Masvidal, has also hinted at a potential return to the UFC to fight on their rumored Miami card, which could cause some pushback from the promotion.
