Oleksandr Usyk maintained his status as the undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating Tyson Fury in their rematch. The judges unanimously scored the bout 116-112 in favor of Usyk, though the decision sparked some disagreement among observers.
The two heavyweights initially faced off in May, where Usyk emerged victorious and claimed the title of undisputed champion. Despite Fury’s intentions to rectify his previous mistakes, the rematch did not unfold as he had hoped.
Prior to the rematch, Fury made strategic changes by removing his father, John, from his corner team and entering the fight at a heavier weight compared to their first encounter. These adjustments, however, did not appear to yield the desired effect on fight night.
Lennox Lewis, the last undisputed heavyweight champion before Usyk, watched the match attentively. He concurred with the judges’ decision but noted that Fury should have demonstrated more effort.
Lewis expressed his opinion on TNT Sports Boxing, stating, “It was a good fight. I wanted to see Tyson more aggressive. He should have gone after Usyk more. Fury could have done more work. Usyk hit Fury to the body, scoring free shots.”
According to Lewis, the judges likely considered Usyk’s body shots when scoring the fight, which contributed to his edging out rounds over Fury.
Fury did not agree with the result and even shared his personal scoring of the fight, although the specific numbers he gave were not disclosed.
The BBC reported that all three judges scored the fight 116-112 for Usyk. This unanimous decision confirms Usyk’s standing as the leading heavyweight in the sport of boxing.
