Tyson Fury’s got a big choice to make about his boxing future. Johnny Nelson thinks it’s time for the heavyweight champ to hang up his gloves.
Fury lost to Oleksandr Usyk in May, marking his first defeat as a professional. He couldn’t turn things around in their rematch this past weekend. The Gypsy King had some good moments but couldn’t dominate like he usually does.
Nelson, a former cruiserweight world champion, shared his thoughts on the Froch on Fighting podcast. He believes Fury should call it quits, stating, “I think he should walk away. And that’s only because his heart and soul will be absolutely broken. But I can see what will happen. They will dangle a massive carrot between him and ‘AJ’ to fight each other. But these guys are mad millionaires, they don’t need to fight.”
Fury’s had an amazing career. He first became world champ in 2015 by beating Wladimir Klitschko. He picked up the WBC belt in his rematch with Deontay Wilder and defended it against Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora.
Nelson worries that if Fury keeps fighting, he’ll just be in it for the money. He explained, “It’s a case of they will become mercenaries. If you’ve been at the top of the world and been the best or believe you’ve been the best it’s very hard to perform underperform for anything else just to be a guy making up the numbers.”
There’s still talk about a fight between Fury and long-time British rival Anthony Joshua. It’s a natural final contest for both men. But Nelson thinks Fury’s got nothing left to prove.
The BBC reported that Fury had some success against Usyk in their 12-round battle. However, he couldn’t control the fight like he’s done so many times before.
Now, Fury’s got to decide if he wants to keep going or end his career on his own terms. It’s a tough call, but Nelson thinks it’s time for the Gypsy King to ride off into the sunset.
