Terence Crawford knocked out Errol Spence Jr. in the ninth round of their welterweight title fight last July. The bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas ended with Crawford becoming the undisputed champion in the 147-pound division.
Many boxing fans and experts thought the fight would be close. Both fighters came in undefeated, with Spence holding the WBA, WBC, and IBF belts while Crawford had the WBO title. But Crawford dominated from the start, surprising Spence with his power and skills.
After the fight, Spence talked about how Crawford’s strength caught him off guard. “He’s a strong dude,” Spence said. “I got a feel for his power probably like first, second round. You know, everybody at this top level have some type of power. But I think because my timing was off he was catching me in between shots.”
Crawford’s win made him the first undisputed welterweight champion in the four-belt era. He added Spence’s three titles to his own WBO belt, cementing his place as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
Since the loss, Spence hasn’t fought again. He might move up to super-welterweight for his next fight, with Sebastian Fundora, the WBO and WBC champion in that division, as a possible opponent.
Crawford, on the other hand, wants an even bigger challenge. He’s calling out Canelo Alvarez, the unified super-middleweight champion, for what would be a massive fight between two of boxing’s biggest stars.
