WBC and lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury expressed his disappointment after the fight with Francis Ngannou on Saturday. Despite being knocked down in the third round, Fury managed to recover and win the bout by split decision. However, he acknowledged that it was not his best performance and gave credit to Ngannou for a tough battle. The fact that Ngannou was making his professional boxing debut only added to the excitement surrounding the fight.
“It wasn’t my best performance,” Fury admitted on Monday. Despite having a good training camp, Fury refused to make any excuses for his performance. He acknowledged that it was a tough fight and had to get up from the mat to secure the victory. Fury recognized Ngannou’s skills and emphasized that he couldn’t underestimate his opponent, contrary to what some media reports suggested.
“Well, it was a below-average performance,” Fury said. “But you’re not taking anything away from your opponent. You can be as good as your opponent allows you to be and that’s a fact.” Despite not having any prior footage and knowledge of Ngannou’s boxing abilities, Fury praised his opponent for being awkward and giving him a challenging fight. He even declared Ngannou as the toughest opponent he has faced in the past 10 years.
Fury, however, remained confident in his victory over Ngannou. He believed that he dominated the fight and limited Ngannou’s chances to close the gap. Fury also revealed his plans to fight Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed world heavyweight championship in the future.
