Jon Anik, UFC’s lead play-by-play commentator, acknowledged the criticism aimed at Colby Covington for bringing up welterweight champion Leon Edwards’ murdered father during the UFC 296 pre-fight press conference. Anik, who has been targeted by Covington in the past, expressed surprise at the level of public outrage.
Covington has a history of controversial behavior, including threatening Anik and expressing support for Edwards’ opponent, Belal Muhammad. Anik questioned why Covington’s behavior toward him didn’t elicit as much backlash.
“Colby Covington is known for crossing the line,” Anik said in an interview on the “Anik & Florian” Podcast. “So I’ll admit I’m a little surprised at how upset the public was, and I know this is a minority opinion. I’m sure Leon Edwards and his family are very upset, which is understandable. Even though his father wasn’t necessarily a doting father or a good person, Leon still carries with him the pain of his father’s murder.”
Anik also highlighted the disparity in reactions, pointing out that when Covington threatened him, there was no widespread condemnation. “When the UFC threatened that all my children would grow up without a father, the UFC didn’t feel the ire of the promotion at all. There were no boos to be heard. So when it comes to outrage over Colby Covington, it’s pretty much a matter of some degree. There seems to be some selectivity,” he added.
Despite the emotional impact of Covington’s remarks, Edwards managed to maintain his composure and went on to defeat Covington by unanimous decision at T-Mobile Arena, retaining his title.
