Las Vegas, Nevada – Magomed Ankalaev We believe he is a true top contender for the championship.

Ankalaev settled his feud with Johnnie Walker by knocking out the Brazilian with a right hand in the second round at UFC Vegas 84 last night (Saturday, January 13, 2024), followed by an inside uppercut at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. (See highlights). Ankalaev was awarded a Performance of the Night bonus for his knockout.

Ankalaev finds himself in a peculiar position as he is set to face Alex Pereira for his next shot at the light heavyweight title, while another fighter is in line for an automatic title opportunity. Former light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill.

However, the Russian believes that Pereira should be his next challenge.

“If you look at the statistics, I believe I deserve the belt more because I have 10 wins, six of which are by knockout,” Ankalaev told the media at the UFC Vegas 84 post-fight press conference. (see here). Jamahal Hill has had eight fights in the UFC. So it’s clear that I’m a stronger candidate than Jamahal Hill.”

UFC CEO Dana White assured that Hill would have a shot at the title upon his return, but there was no significant update on his Achilles injury other than that it’s “healing well.” Therefore, his return is still uncertain, which may benefit Ankalaev.

Akalaev is currently on a 10-fight winning streak, which includes no contests and draws.
