Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington has shared an X-ray showing a fractured leg sustained during a defeat to Leon Edwards in the UFC 296 title match, suggesting that the injury occurred as a result of a blow to his elbow from Edwards during the first kick attempt of the match.

Covington, currently ranked No. 5 in the welterweight division, recently faced Leon Edwards in a highly anticipated grudge match for the undisputed title at December’s UFC 296 event.

Despite his efforts to claim the undisputed championship, Covington suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Edwards after five grueling rounds.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, Covington revealed that he broke his leg during the opening kick attempt in his fight against Edwards, the reigning titleholder.

Two months later, the MMA Masters trainee shared X-rays showing a fracture in his foot following the UFC 296 event.

“The results weren’t what I wanted,” said Colby Covington in an interview with Submission Radio. “It wasn’t my night, I broke my leg right away and couldn’t execute the wrestling and pressure I had planned. I had X-rays when I got home. I didn’t want to share this until I had the images, but here they are.”

“I knew right away that it was serious because it happened on the first kick I threw,” explained Colby Covington. “I aimed for his orthodox side but hit his elbow, since he was in an orthodox stance. I was perhaps overly eager and didn’t anticipate a potential defense as a southpaw. Despite fighting on one leg for 25 minutes and landing over 100 more strikes than Leon, the haters will still find a reason to criticize me.”
