Ksenia Karelina, the girlfriend of former IBO welterweight champion Chris Van Heerden, is currently held in custody in Russia on suspicion of financing the Ukrainian military, which is in conflict with Russia.
Sky news Van Helden went to Russia in early January to visit relatives and had plans to return to Los Angeles after two weeks. Karelina reassured him, saying, “It’s okay, I’m Russian, it’s okay.” Van Helden expressed his feelings of guilt, mentioning that he had purchased her plane ticket.
Upon her arrival in Russia, Karelina was detained at the airport, and although she was later allowed to continue her journey, her phone was confiscated. She informed Van Helden that she was retrieving her phone in late January, after which he lost contact with her. US authorities were notified of her arrest on February 8, as per Sky news.
The Russian security agency FSB disclosed that they had thwarted illicit activities involving financial aid to a 33-year-old dual citizen of the US and Russia, accusing her of actions against their national security interests. A video footage showed a woman, presumed to be Karelina, being escorted by uniformed personnel, with her face obscured by a winter hat.
Boxing insider The US Department of State was contacted for information and responded with assurances of prioritizing the safety of Americans abroad, acknowledging the detention of a US citizen in Russia, and committing to providing suitable consular support while respecting the individual’s privacy.
Via social media, Van Helden called for prayers for Karelina, emphasizing the strength and resilience she requires during this challenging time.
