The newly crowned featherweight champion, Ilya Topria, took jabs at the reigning lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev, on social media by highlighting Makhachev’s only professional loss back in 2015 when he was knocked out by Adriano Martins in a video post.

Topria, who recently claimed the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 298, solidified his position by securing a second-round victory over Alexander Volkanovski, a common opponent for both fighters.

With an undefeated record of 15-0, Topuria showcased his skill as a dominant finisher in the Octagon and emerged as a formidable lightweight contender. Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential showdown between Topria and Makhachev, who currently holds the pound-for-pound title.

Following his victory at UFC 298, Ilya Topria expressed his determination to face Islam Makhachev, stating, “The ultimate goal remains the same. He (Makhachev) is in for a challenge.”

Recently, Topria made a public appearance in Madrid at the Real Madrid vs. Sevilla La Liga match, where he proudly displayed the UFC title on the field and participated in the ceremonial kick-off.

In a clear reference to Makhachev, Topria playfully taunted the Russian fighter’s defeat to Martins in 2015 on his official website and Instagram stories. The video showcased Makhachev’s early loss via knockout within two minutes of the match starting.

While Makhachev has been inactive since October last year, he made a stunning return by defeating Volkanovski at UFC 294 with a well-executed high kick and follow-up attack.

Head coach Javier Mendez hinted that Makhachev might face Justin Gaethje in a future UFC event and is expected to make a comeback to the Octagon later this year.
