Promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed concern that Ryan Garcia’s career could be in jeopardy if he is defeated by Devin Haney on April 20. Hearn emphasized that a loss to Haney would have serious implications for Ryan’s future in boxing.
While not explicitly stating it, Hearn suggested that a defeat against WBC light welterweight champion Haney could potentially end Ryan’s career (24-1, 20 KOs).
A challenging situation
With this being Ryan’s second loss in three fights, it has raised questions about his ability to compete at an elite level. Hearn believes that a loss to Haney could impact Ryan’s ability to secure lucrative fights against other top boxers, which could lead to a significant decrease in his earnings.
“Losing to Devin Haney would undoubtedly put Ryan in a difficult position,” Eddie Hearn shared with the media. Ryan Garcia discusses his upcoming bout against Devin Haney on April 20th.
Haney: A formidable opponent
“Moving up to the 140-pound division is where Ryan truly belongs,” Hearn remarked. “With no restrictions in place, facing Devin poses a real challenge. Devin’s style is intricate and highly effective.
“Thus, if Ryan doesn’t emerge victorious in this match, he will face difficulties in the sport. Nevertheless, he is young and needs to be commended for accepting this challenge rather than giving up. ‘We need to embrace the toughest challenges in sports,’ Hearn added.
Hearn stressed that Ryan will have a tough time breaking through Haney’s solid defense and quick reflexes. Simply overpowering Haney won’t be enough for Ryan to secure a win, and it remains uncertain if Ryan possesses the requisite skills to defeat an opponent of Haney’s caliber.
