Ryan Garcia is anticipating that his upcoming fight against WBC Lightweight champion Devin Haney, scheduled for April 20th on DAZN, will attract 2 million Pay-Per-View purchases, doubling the number from his bout against Gervonta Davis last year.
Haney Hurdle
The young boxing sensation, Ryan, is optimistic about the success of this fight, and he might be onto something. The buzz surrounding the matchup is substantial, partly due to the presence of Ryan and Devin’s father, Bill Haney, who were the center of attention during yesterday’s press conference in New York.
Reaching the 2 million PPV milestone will require significant effort from Bill and Ryan, as it stands as a considerable target, especially when compared to Devin’s previous fight against Regis Prograis which reportedly garnered 30,000 buys on DAZN PPV.
Devin Haney places great importance on promotional activities, potentially relieving Ryan and Bill from the bulk of the promotional work. Devin is expected to spearhead the promotional efforts.
If Bill fails to promote the fight effectively, diverts attention to discussions about a potential showdown between Devin and Gervonta Davis, Ryan might find himself taking charge of the promotional activities on his own. Bill’s performance fluctuates; while he can be exceptional on good days, he can appear distracted on bad days.
Focused on Destruction
“I just want to dominate him,” stated Ryan Garcia during an interview with Brian Campbell on the YouTube channel when reflecting on his confrontation with Devin Haney at the recent New York press conference.
Ryan is determined to overcome Haney, and come fight night, the intensity is expected to be palpable on April 20th. Haney’s derogatory labeling of Ryan as an “alcoholic” adds fuel to the fire.
“I have let go of that narrative. I am solely focused on fighting in New York,” Ryan affirmed, when questioned about his prior inclination to move the bout to Las Vegas. “The atmosphere here is electric, and I have full authority in making that decision. I’m sticking with New York for now.
“Yes, I believe we will exceed 2 million PPV purchases,” Ryan confidently asserted, envisioning that the Haney fight will surpass the 1 million buys achieved during the Gervonta Davis fight last April.
When asked about his strategy against Haney, Ryan cryptically replied, “I won’t disclose any specific tactics, but he is in for a tough time.”
