Alexander Volkanovski is determined to return to the octagon by the end of 2024, with a clear condition – he will only make a comeback to the featherweight division if there’s a title at stake. Following his loss of the 145-pound championship to Ilia Topuria in February, Volkanovski took a break to recuperate from back-to-back knockout defeats. During his hiatus, Max Holloway secured a knockout win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 and expressed his interest in challenging Topuria for the title in September at UFC 306. However, Volkanovski has different priorities as he patiently waits for his chance.

Though Volkanovski eagerly awaits the opportunity to vie for the featherweight title again, particularly eyeing a rematch with Topuria, he’s also open to the prospect of competing in the lightweight division for thrilling fights. Despite his previous unsuccessful attempts to claim the lightweight title, Volkanovski is enthusiastic about engaging in marquee matchups in the division while preparing for another shot at featherweight glory.

It appears Volkanovski might have to wait until 2025 for another crack at the featherweight title, as Holloway and Topuria seem set to collide later this year. In the interim, participating in the lightweight ranks could keep him active, offer substantial financial incentives, and help him refocus on the featherweight division in the coming year. Volkanovski is intrigued by potential matchups at lightweight, such as bouts against Charles Oliveira or Dustin Poirier, to maintain his drive and dedication in his quest for championship success.
