Tyson Fury tipped the scales at a whopping 281 pounds for his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk. The weigh-in, held in Riyadh, set the stage for Saturday night’s highly anticipated heavyweight clash.
Fury, known as “The Gypsy King,” showed up fully clothed, leather jacket and all, raising eyebrows about his true fighting weight. His opponent, unified heavyweight champion Usyk, weighed in at a much lighter 226 pounds.
The weight difference between the two fighters is striking. Fury outweighs Usyk by almost four stone, or nearly 50 pounds. This marks a significant increase from Fury’s previous fight weight of 262 pounds.
Fans, fighters, and pundits are now speculating about Fury’s strategy. Many think he’ll try to use his size advantage to overwhelm Usyk and end the fight early. But questions remain about whether this weight gain is part of Fury’s mind games or if he’s actually bulked up for the bout.
Their previous encounter saw Usyk emerge victorious by split decision. Fury found himself on the back foot and took some hard shots during that fight.
Former world champion Amir Khan shared his thoughts on the upcoming fight: “Both guys look ready. It’s gonna be a massive fight tomorrow. I wish them both all the very best. I do lean more towards Fury winning the fight but, like I said, it’s gonna be hard. I’ve just realised that Fury’s come the heaviest he’s ever come for a fight. He’s gonna push [Usyk] back, meaning he’s gonna have Usyk on the pedal.”
Khan added a note of caution about Fury’s strategy: “Yeah it’s [easier said than done against Usyk] because he hits those angles so well and catches you with small shots. They might not be hard but a lot of them will start causing you damage.”
The stage is now set for an intriguing battle between size and skill. If Fury manages to turn the tables on Usyk, we might see these two heavyweights complete a trilogy in the near future.
