There is a significant controversy unfolding at the Olympic Games in Paris within the realm of boxing. Angele Carini of Italy made a surprising move by quitting the women’s boxing match against Imane Khelif just 46 seconds into the first round after receiving a hard hit. Carini cited never having experienced such a powerful blow in her life as the reason for her decision to step away. Khelif’s performance, although impressive, has been overshadowed by doubts raised about Khelif’s gender identity.

The issue of gender within sports has long been a contentious topic, and now it has impacted the boxing community. Khelif had previously faced hurdles in being allowed to compete as a female boxer and only gained entry to the Olympics recently despite not meeting the eligibility criteria for women’s competitions.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni weighed in on the matter, stating, “We have to be mindful that in our quest to avoid discrimination, we may inadvertently end up discriminating.” Carini described the match against Khelif as physically overwhelming and had to withdraw due to the intense pain she was experiencing.

Carini expressed her initial enthusiasm to fight but ultimately decided to halt the bout in the first round due to the unbearable pain. Despite the victory over Carini, Khelif remains focused on pursuing the gold medal. Prominent figures such as boxing champion Claressa Shields and author J.K. Rowling have criticized Khelif’s participation in the women’s boxing division.

Shields remarked, “I empathize with her (Carini’s) anguish, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of a male competitor. I believe the Olympics have overlooked a critical issue.”
