Arman Tsarukyan’s patience has been rewarded, as the Armenian wrestler is set to face the dominant champion Islam Makhachev for the long-awaited title shot in January 2025.
Given Makhachev’s formidable grappling skills, it is crucial for the 22-3 Armenian fighter to perfect his wrestling techniques to secure victory at UFC 311. Fortunately, he has the guidance of fellow wrestler Khamzat Chimaev, which will be invaluable for this ascent to the championship.
Earlier this year, both Tsarukyan and Chimaev took on the role of coaches for the new season of Hype Fighting Championship’s reality show.
After much anticipation, full video footage from a grappling match between them has finally surfaced online, showcasing their skills as they went head-to-head for a full six minutes.
While Chimaev maintained control for much of the match, largely due to a significant height and weight advantage, Tsarukyan demonstrated resilience by managing to avoid being submitted by the undefeated ‘Borz.’
Tsarukyan reflected on the fight, stating, “The fight with Khamzat was in a good tempo, I was defending and didn’t give him an option to choke me.” He noted the challenges posed by Chimaev’s size, explaining, “With the size that he is now, it was very difficult for me to move him or go behind his back.”
He emphasized the defensive approach he took during the match, saying, “I didn’t take any risks, I just stayed on the defensive and didn’t let Khamzat make a hold.” Tsarukyan acknowledged Chimaev as his “strongest opponent” yet and highlighted the importance of sensitivity in their exchanges.
“I’m just used to wrestling with my weight, I don’t work with those who are heavier because it’s traumatic… [But this was] good experience… Sensitivity [is his advantage], he feels good when you’re going to make a takedown – weight, physical strength, and technique do a good job [too].”
Chimaev recognized that his size was a key factor during their grappling match, but he praised Tsarukyan’s dedication as he prepares for the lightweight title showdown with Makhachev.
“Arman is a very good wrestler, but I am 10Kg bigger than him, so it was difficult… Arman is at the highest level, he sees everything, feels everything, there is a technique [to everything he does],” Chimaev remarked.
With the title bout set for UFC 311 on January 18, 2025, in Los Angeles, there is uncertainty about whether Chimaev will be in Tsarukyan’s corner. Makhachev, on the other hand, will have the support of former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in his corner.
Additionally, it’s going to be quite a busy night for Khabib, as his cousin Umar Nurmagomedov will also be competing for UFC gold in the co-main event against Merab Dvalishvili.
