David Benavidez didn’t get the chance to fight Canelo Alvarez, but he did claim the WBC interim light heavyweight title by defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk in a commanding performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight lasted 12 rounds and served as the co-main event for the Gervonta Davis – Frank Martin pay-per-view card.
Gvozdyk started strong in the initial round, but Benavidez quickly gained control. Benavidez demonstrated effective body work in round two and completely dominated the fight by the third round. Despite Gvozdyk’s efforts in the fourth round, Benavidez kept landing his punches. Benavidez maintained his dominance in the fifth round, consistently hitting his opponent.
Gvozdyk fought bravely throughout the match, but Benavidez’s superiority was evident in each round. Benavidez continued to outperform Gvozdyk from the sixth round onwards. Despite Gvozdyk finding some success at times, Benavidez’s impactful strikes on his opponent were decisive.
Ultimately, Benavidez was declared the winner by unanimous decision after the judges’ verdict was announced.
