Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis has been directed by the sanctioning body to defend his title against mandatory challenger Karen Chukhadzhian in a rematch.
Hearn also shared that he has made a substantial offer to WBC 147-pound champion Mario Barrios for a potential unification fight with Ennis, but is waiting for a response.
There is a chance of Ennis squaring off against Conor Benn, a matchup that might excite British fans but not necessarily resonate with American audiences. Hearn voiced his frustration with the IBF’s ruling, feeling it does not align with Ennis’ aspiration to become a boxing star.
“I see some comments about Jaron Ennis. The mandatory has been called, and I’m not over the moon about it because it’s a good fighter in Karen Chukhadzhian, but it’s someone that he’s boxed before,” said Hearn.
If the Barrios bout falls through, Hearn could suggest Ennis to relinquish the IBF belt and move up a weight division for better opportunities.
Hearn stressed the significance of securing meaningful fights for Ennis, particularly focusing on unification contests. He restated his offer to Barrios and expressed his eagerness for major matchups for both Ennis and Benn in the time ahead.
