WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray has been a staple in pro wrestling for decades and shows no signs of slowing down. Despite his age, fans often wonder if he will eventually retire from the business. However, Ray has now claimed that he will never retire from professional wrestling.
While speaking to Tyrus on Outkick, Bully Ray was asked whether he has thought about retiring from professional wrestling. Bully Ray made it clear that he will never retire from professional wrestling, describing retirement as a “fake word” in the industry. He pointed out that it’s often used as a way to exit a contract, referencing how Terry Funk retired multiple times and how Shawn Michaels also considered stepping away. Bully Ray stated that he only participates in wrestling when he truly enjoys it and can tell stories the way he wants to.
“I will never retire. Retirement is a fake word in wrestling. Terry, it’s a nice way to get out of your contract. Terry Funk retired, what, like a dozen times? Whatever. Shawn Michaels, I will only do this when I truly enjoy doing it. If I can have fun and tell stories the way I want to tell them.”
Bully Ray explained that short one-off appearances don’t allow him to accomplish anything meaningful. If he were to come in for just one night and lose to someone, it wouldn’t benefit the other wrestler because fans have short attention spans and would forget about it quickly.
Instead, Ray believes that a minimum of three months would allow him to fully develop a story, help elevate the babyface, and create a memorable, impactful moment in wrestling.
“I’ve had people call me and say, ‘Hey, will you come in for the night?’ No, I can’t get anything done in one night. If I come in for one night and lose to whoever you want me to lose to, it does nothing for that person because people’s attention spans are so short, they’ll forget about it in an instant.
However, if you let me come in for a minimum of three months and let me tell the stories the way I can, let me breathe down somebody’s neck the way I can, let me be the heel in pro wrestling that not many people can do anymore, by the time we get to the end of this story, your good guy, your babyface, will be made. They’ll be looked at by the fans in a higher esteem.”
Bully Ray noted that he is willing to get back in the ring if the right opportunity arises, particularly if the money is right. However, unless those conditions are met, there is no reason for him to return. He feels he has already done his time in the ring, taken his bumps, and traveled the world. Instead, he prefers to talk about wrestling on the radio than to actually step into the ring again, unless the right circumstances present themselves for him to really get involved.
“That’s what I want to do. If the money’s right, that’s what I want to do. Unless that’s on the table, there’s no reason for me to get in the ring. Zero. I’ve done my time, I’ve taken my bumps, I’ve taken the knots, the whole nine yards. I’ve humped the road. I’ve been all over the world, there and back. I’d rather talk on the radio about wrestling than go do it. But when the right opportunities are there for me to really sink my teeth into.”
Bully Ray competed during the November 6th episode of WWE NXT, where he teamed up with Trick Williams to square off against Ethan Page and Ridge Holland. Therefore, Ray will continue to wrestle whenever he wants to and fans may have to accept the fact he may never retire, for better or for worse.
