Canelo Alvarez dismissed David Benavidez’s chances at light-heavyweight in just four words: “He’s not the same.” The Mexican superstar made these comments after Benavidez moved up to 175 pounds. Benavidez took this step when he couldn’t get a fight with Canelo at super-middleweight, where Alvarez holds all the belts.
Canelo had asked for over 150 million dollars to fight Benavidez at 168 pounds. When that didn’t work out, Benavidez decided to try his luck in a new weight class.
In June, Benavidez won his first fight at light-heavyweight. He beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk and picked up the WBC interim title. Now, he’s got a big fight coming up in February against David Morrell, the WBA Regular champion.
But Canelo doesn’t seem impressed. He told Fight Hub TV:
“175 is his weight class. But he do nothing at 175, really. He’s not the same.”
Canelo also thinks Benavidez won’t be able to come back down to super-middleweight.
While Benavidez is settling into his new weight class, Canelo’s name keeps coming up for a possible fight with Terence Crawford. Benavidez has shared his thoughts on how that fight might go, but we don’t know what he said yet.
Benavidez had been chasing a showdown with Canelo for a long time. Now, he might have a shot at the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol if he beats Morrell. That could be his ticket to becoming a big star at light-heavyweight, even without fighting Canelo.
