Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Canelo Alvarez went head-to-head with UFC 306 last week in Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite the competition, the boxing sensation still attracted a significant audience. Despite the UFC event at the Sphere in “Sin City,” Alvarez successfully defended his title against Edgar Berlanga on the same night in the same city. This was a bold move, especially with UFC investing $20 million in UFC 306. It was a real test to see if Canelo could steal the spotlight in Vegas.
To everyone’s surprise, the middleweight champion delivered big numbers. As per a recent report from Sports Business Journal, 650,000 viewers bought the Alvarez vs. Berlanga pay-per-view (PPV) to witness Canelo’s victory over the New York fighter across 12 rounds. Moreover, the gate for Canelo vs. Berlanga raked in an impressive $17 million. Though it didn’t match UFC 306’s record-breaking $22 million gate, it was still a significant financial win for Canelo.
The PPV figures for UFC 306 have not been disclosed, but they are believed to be in a similar range to Canelo’s numbers.
