A lightweight championship rematch headlines the first UFC pay-per-view event of the year on January 18 in Inglewood, California. Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev (26-1) will face top contender Arman Tsarukyan (22-3) in the featured fight at the Intuit Dome.
The two competitors first met in July 2019 during Tsarukyan’s octagon debut, while Makhachev already had six fights under his belt. Makhachev won that initial encounter via unanimous decision, and just six fights later, he would earn the title of UFC 155-pound champion.
Since that loss to Makhachev, Tsarukyan has been on an impressive run, winning nine of his last ten fights. His most recent victory came against former champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 300. As fans eagerly anticipate their UFC 311 rematch, it’s worth revisiting their initial bout.
