Welcome to Midnight Mania!

The highly-anticipated UFC 300 event is just around the corner, with Conor McGregor’s presence sure to draw attention. While it remains to be seen whether UFC 300 will break pay-per-view (PPV) records like previous events, it promises to be a stacked card from start to finish.

It’s natural for any fighter to aspire to headline such a monumental high-profile event. Every athlete dreams of the opportunity to showcase their skills on the grandest stage of them all, especially in a significant fight card like UFC 300.

However, not every fighter jumps at the chance.

Several matchups were considered for the headline spot, including a middleweight feud between Israel Adesanya and Drikas du Plessis. Unfortunately, du Plessis’ health concerns prevented the matchup. Similarly, welterweight contender Leon Edwards was open to three different opponents for UFC 300, excluding Belal Muhammad. However, three potential challengers for the welterweight title declined offers for various reasons.

Eventually, Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill was confirmed as the main event. Yet, according to a recent interview with Magomed Ankalaev, this might not have been Pereira’s first choice. Ankalaev cited Ramadan as a reason for declining a title shot but remains optimistic about his future light heavyweight title opportunity.

“This fight is particularly intriguing for me because I’ve been guaranteed a showdown with the eventual winner,” Ankalaev stated. Despite Pereira’s involvement in the bout, he had to pass due to Ramadan observances.

Ankalaev emphasized, “Having been in the sport for a significant amount of time, I don’t fear any opponent in any discipline. The sole aim is to claim the championship belt.”

Ankalaev’s decision to forego a UFC title shot, banking on a future opportunity, is a bold move given the uncertainty in such promises.

Nevertheless, Ankalaev has demonstrated his worth, having recently defeated Johnny Walker and secured an unbeaten streak of 12 fights, including a “no contest” and a draw. His draw in the initial UFC title clash against Jan Blachowicz left him dissatisfied, leading Ankalaev to christen himself the “uncrowned champion.”

The official crowning moment may have to wait a bit longer.
