Jay Opetaia was recently warned that he may lose his Ring Magazine/IBF cruiserweight champion title if he proceeds to defend his title against England’s Zoro Ellis as planned, instead of facing mandatory opponent Mairis Briedis.
This decision comes after Opetaia’s victory over Jordan Thompson, for which he received an exemption from the IBF. The organization has since made it clear that there will be no consecutive exemptions allowed, and that Opetaia must face Briedis next.
Opetaia’s co-promoter Eddie Hearn expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that the upcoming fights in Saudi Arabia could be life-changing for Opetaia, and should not be hindered by the decision of the committee.
Despite the potential loss of his IBF title, Opetaia holds strong beliefs in the value of being a world champion and the privilege of holding the cruiserweight belt. He also acknowledges the importance of following the rules, but stands firm in his commitment to his future and his children’s future.
Opetaia remains confident in his abilities, stating that winning the championship in The Ring is the true measure of being the best fighter in the world in his weight class. He considers it an honor to hold and defend the belt, and remains grateful for the privilege it brings.
